That smell when your heat or AC kicks on is one of those things people write off as normal. It's not. It's almost always a sign that something is wrong in the ductwork - and in a lot of older homes, that something is hiding under the floor in the crawl space where nobody ever looks. That's exactly what we were dealing with on this job.

Here's what we pulled out: old ducts that were completely falling apart. The insulation had degraded and crumbled away, the inner liner was torn open in multiple spots, and there was visible buildup of grime and debris coating the inside of the duct walls. When ductwork gets to this point, your HVAC system isn't just working harder - it's pulling air through openings it was never supposed to, dragging in whatever is sitting in that crawl space and sending it right into your living areas.

We went in and replaced the damaged runs with new flexible duct, properly sealed at every connection point. Then we strapped everything up correctly so it stays off the crawl space floor and holds its position over time. That part matters more than people realize. Ducts that sag or rest on the ground are more vulnerable to moisture damage and critter activity - two things that will turn a minor repair into a major replacement if left alone long enough.

The difference between a properly installed duct system and a neglected one is something you feel and smell every single day. Clean, sealed, supported ductwork means the air moving through your home is actually coming from where it should - not from a dark, damp space under your floorboards. If you've got a funky smell when the system runs, or rooms that just won't heat or cool evenly, the crawl space is the first place we'd want to look.
